Pet Heroes in Action: DoveLewis Blood Bank Shines During National Blood Donor Month
PORTLAND, Ore. – At DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital, capes are replaced by furry coats and superhero masks come adorned with whiskers, because National Blood Donor Month takes on a new dimension of heroism. Meet the unsung heroes of the DoveLewis Blood Bank, a volunteer group of dogs and cats dedicated to providing life-saving solutions.
In the world of pet emergencies and illnesses, the DoveLewis Blood Bank stands as a beacon of hope, providing over 700 transfusions annually for both their hospital and the local community. Here, the spotlight is on our volunteer group of dogs and cats – everyday heroes who enable it all. Setting us apart from closed-colony animal blood banks, we are a community blood bank where our donors and their families actively choose to volunteer their time, showcasing a level of generosity that is truly remarkable.
Blood Bank Coordinator Kelsey Reinauer, CVT, emphasizes, "Our dog and cat volunteers are affectionately called superheroes for the work they do. Having a program like the DoveLewis Blood Bank reminds us all that our pets, too, can play a vital role in saving lives.”
The DoveLewis Blood Bank relies solely on volunteers to supply the necessary donations, carefully screening pet donors for the safety of both the donor and the recipient. The donation process is tailored to ensure the comfort of the pets, followed by the added bonus of treats and a new toy to take home post-donation.
"As we observe National Blood Donor Month, let's recognize the importance of our animals in this life-saving narrative. They are the unsung heroes making a significant impact," adds Reinauer.
The effect of these heroes is seen in patients like Minnow, who, after collapsing, becoming non-responsive, and having a soaring temperature, found a second chance at life with the help of plasma transfusions. Thanks to the week-long dedicated care from the DoveLewis team and donations from our blood donors, Minnow was able to return home with her family.
“It was so awful to see her like that,” said Minnow’s owner, Amanda, “We cannot thank the staff at DoveLewis enough for the amazing care they provided for Minnow. They made it possible for her to keep up her fight!”
While DoveLewis Blood Bank has made strides in meeting transfusion needs in the Portland Metro area, the demand for canine blood persists. This National Blood Donor Month, DoveLewis invites pet owners to consider having their dogs become part of this vital initiative.
